Confession

Yesterday I came to terms with something about myself. Shelby and Tonya have been teasing me for quite some time that I was a beachcomber, but I denied it. Sure, I noticed the little rocks of different colors sitting in the sand like shining little gemstones just waiting to be picked up… but I didn’t actually bring them home. I mean… what would I do with them?

But yesterday as we were walking on the beach, the tide was low and there was a myriad of shiny little colored stones of all shapes and sizes just sitting in the sand, sparkling in the sun… waiting for someone to pocket them. First I snatched a rock with fossilized shells on it, claiming that it would be educational for my kids. Next it was a glistening piece of white quartz, all rounded from the sea- because Bella likes shiny things. Then there was the heart shaped rock because my neighbor collects them. But then, the jig was up. I found two pieces of beach glass, one white and one brown. There was a little stone that was bright green with white lines through it- how could I pass that up? Then there was a small, flat, black stone that was almost perfectly square and had a single white line going through it’s middle. Another one was round and marbled with red and brown.

I’m not exactly sure what I’m going to do with my little collection, but I know now that I can never stop. I think as long as I don’t put them in my bathroom, and don’t start bringing home driftwood and buoys and thick knotted rope, it’ll be alright. Maybe they should stay outside? I haven’t come up with my boundaries yet, but at least I am being honest about my situations.

My name is Sarah and I like to find particularly lovely things that wash up on the shore, and bring them home.
