Sarah’s movie reviews
June 9, 2008
First, I would like to highly recomend the movie the Conscientious Object to all of my loved ones- it’s such a crazy amazing story. It’s a documentary about the first Conscientious Objector to ever recieve the congressional medal of honor. The story itself is unbelievable- the movie is a little slow at some parts but it’s beyond worth it in the end. Even though the story is about a conscientious objector, it’s not like a pacifist movie… it’s really about sticking to your beliefes no matter what. It leaves you feeling inspired and warm and fuzzy inside. If you have Netflix you can watch it instantly online.
Second, I would like to recomend Son of Rambow- which is super cute and touching coming of age/buddy flick. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry….etc. It’s in select theaters now. Someone should really pay me to do this.
In other news- one graduation done (Shaddia’s highschool graduation) 2 more to go!! Plus lots of tearful summer goodbyes

That’s so sad about the kid in Redmond!! I’m glad I was too young to remember what the paper said about Tony- I would probably still be mad about it, lol. It’s so disguisting how the media uses stuff like that. The other side of the coin is, of course, all the kids that are getting gunned down in Watsonville and you never hear a thing about it. I only hear it from their friends and people who were there at the shooting…. not a word from the media. I guess I can kind of understand it- I don’t even mention most of the shootings anymore.
I feel really horrible because I took a personal day and skipped school today and Stephanie showed up talking about how yesterday her friend was shot twice (stomach and head) right after she had left him, and she went back and found him on the ground in the park. Linda put her on the phone with me, and we talked about it for a while and she seemed alright but then her, “Okay, bye…. I love you….you’ll REALLY be here tomorrow? For SURE?” made me feel sooooo guilty for not being there
I think I should start a group home this summer so I can just keep them all with me.
No Escuela Manana…

So, after a smokey day of staying indoors due to the falling ash and blood red sun- the powers that be decided there will be no school tomorrow (I spentmy evening making phone calls home in spanish…which I don’t speak). Before I continue this post let me just say that I am sincerely sorry for those who have lost their homes or are in danger of losing their homes. That’s really really horrible and I would never wish that on anyone.
Seeing that there is nothing that I can do to change the situation however, uhm, can I just say- WHOOOOO freakin’ HOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think this is the California version of a snow day. So here’s the weekend line up. Tomorrow- I go to work with no students and have an entire day to catch up on paperwork and plan out my last couple of weeks of lessons, which is excellent since the kids are getting pretty restless and I’m SERIOUSLY running out of steam. This bonus work day will be followed on Saturday by a sailing trip with a couple of my kids, and then by the 2 day weekend of Sunday and Monday for traditional weekend activities such as hiking and laying on the beach . I’m practically giddy- (despite my sorrow for the afore mentioned people effected by the fire.)
Let’s all be honest. This post makes me a bad person.
I have to say, yesterday rated pretty high on the Friday scale.
Along with being a positively BEAUTIFUL day (a bit too hot midday but it made for a lovely evening) I had two kids pass portions of the CAHSEE. They were both situations where it was a really really big deal. One was a very life changing deal as a matter of fact. It’s the best feeling ever to have played some role in that.
This excellent day at work was followed by an superb meal at the new mediteranean place here in aptos (up by Aptos health). I had the best fruit salad of my life- all I’ll say is that it included fresh mint and candied ginger. They have amazing Kabobs and flat bread made in this cool wood fired stove and everthing from full mediteranean platters to gyros to go. mmm…mmmm….mmmm….. very valuable discovery.
We finished the evening by watching the new Narnia movie- which I was pretty doubtful about because 1) Prince Caspian is my LEAST favorite book- I sometimes skip it altogether and 2) the first Narnia movie wasn’t all that great. I thought they made it a little too kid-friendly and it had a certain “power rangers” feel to it.
However- the new movie is really, really good. It’s a bit darker, higher quality, and they picked up the pace on some of the duller parts of the book. I really liked it. Maybe it helps that I’m not crazy about the book so I didn’t get offended when they changed things. Actually, I thought most of the changes were an improvement.
So, our weekend is off to a good start. Which is probably a good thing since I think we’re both spending the rest of it working.
Hope everyone has a great weekend!
